Moshoeshoe’s Day Commemorated in Maseru – Honouring the Legacy of Lesotho’s Founding Father

On March 11th, 2024, the capital city of Maseru in Lesotho commemorated Moshoeshoe Day, a national holiday honouring the life and legacy of King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation. Born in 1786, Moshoeshoe I came of age during a period marked by inter-tribal conflict and competition for resources. However, he possessed a deep belief in the power of unity and through tireless efforts, brought together various Sotho-speaking tribes under his leadership, culminating in the formation of the Basotho nation in 1822.  He then ascended to become the first king of this newly formed nation.

Moshoeshoe Day serves as a yearly remembrance of the first king on the anniversary of his passing in 1870. This year’s celebrations in Maseru pulsed with vibrant energy as the city witnessed marches by soldiers, colourful parades, and captivating performances of traditional dances. The festivities reflected the deep respect and gratitude the Basotho people hold for their founding father, whose vision and leadership laid the foundation for the nation they know today. Maseru remains a destination where you will not only find some of the best hotels in Lesotho but also experience the nation’s rich history and culture. Properties here such as Avani Lesotho Hotel & Casino continue to offer an ideal base from which to enjoy local festivals like Moshoeshoe’s Day as well.
