Thailand Gears Up for Grand Songkran Festival – A Fun Celebration of a Rich Heritage

The vibrant and joyous Songkran Festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year celebration, is set to dazzle locals and visitors alike even more this year. The Thai government has allocated a whopping 104 million Baht for special festivities in Bangkok and other provinces that will put this cultural event in the spotlight. From 11th to 15th April 2024, the country will come alive during the Maha Songkran World Water Festival with cultural performances, colourful processions, exciting concerts, and spirited revelry.

But there’s more to this festival than meets the eye. On 6th December 2023, UNESCO bestowed a prestigious honour upon Songkran by declaring it an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’. This recognition underscores its significance in preserving Thai heritage and fostering community bonds.

While the traditional aspects of Songkran are deeply revered, it’s the friendly water fights that have become world-famous. Locals and tourists alike take to the streets armed with water guns and buckets, dousing each other in a playful celebration of renewal and goodwill. Be it at Bangkok resorts or Khao Lak family hotels, including properties the likes of Avani+ Khao Lak Resort, visitors have much to look forward to during this festive period.
