Sri Lanka Reduces Visa Fee to Boost Tourism Numbers – Bringing the Island Nation to the World

Sri Lanka officially decided to maintain its initial visa fee of $50 for 30-day tourist visas to improve tourist visits to the country. The decision follows criticisms of the previous increase of the visa fee to $75 for non-SAARC countries, which made Sri Lanka’s visa the most expensive in Asia. Subsequent concerns arose that this would deter tourists from visiting the island.

In response to such concerns, the local government announced that it would be reverting to the original fee of $50 to ensure that the country remains an attractive destination for tourists and travellers. This response was favourably welcomed by the tourism industry which sees the visa system as a crucial component in sustaining the country’s tourism numbers.

Amidst several improvements to boost tourism, like implementing the new e-Visa system and free visa entry for selected countries, Sri Lanka continues to be a top destination for tourists. Data from the Tourism Development Authority indicates that the island received 784,651 tourists in the first four months of 2024, marking a 43% increase from the same period last year. This trend has had a positive impact on Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, which is a crucial component of the local economy.

The country provides a range of attractions from wildlife to historical sites and scenic beaches, and a vibrant cuisine and unique cultural identity. The island also boasts several idyllic resorts and hotels like the Dolphin Beach Resort which features luxury guest pavilions and is a top Kalpitiya hotel. This together with the country’s new and improved visa system will give tourists plenty to look forward to if they set their sights on Sri Lanka as their next travel destination.
